Welcome to The Journey! Wondering what prompted the name? Well, I’ll tell you. Perhaps it’s cliche’ to talk about how life is a journey – not a destination – or whatever. And though that may be true, I’m more concerned with how we view the Christian life. I think so many times we get “stuck” or are satisfied with the status quo – and we fail to realize that this life we’re called to is one that is a continual process. So, this will be a class that will encourage the process.
We will be following the Lectionary for our Scripture each week – and you’ll be able to check back here for those references. This will also be a great place to continue our conversations throughout the week – and allow others who are in college or who have moved away to still be connected to us in some way. We will also be using other texts as supplements to the Scripture. Feel free to pick up one of the following and read it at your leisure along with the Scripture lessons for the week (see below). Then, bring your thoughts and questions to class on Sundays and we’ll enter into conversation. Also, we’ll be doing some spiritual formation exercises (promise, you won’t break a sweat). So, you might want to bring some paper (I actually recommend that you grab a journal that you can keep) and a pen.
For our January 7th class – here are the Scripture texts:
Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 43:1-7
Psalm: Psalm 29
Epistle Lesson: Acts 8:14-17
Gospel Lesson: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
Here is a website that has all the references: http://divinity.library.vanderbilt.edu/lectionary/CEpiphany/index.htm
Books: Searching for God Knows What by Donald Miller; Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller; Compassion by Henri Nouwen; In the Name of Jesus by Henri Nouwen; Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell. You can pick up these books from Borders, Barnes and Noble or order them online. For some reason, Henri Nouwen is hard to find at your local Christian bookstore.
Please feel free to post comments/questions on this site – or share some of what you’re reading these days that applies to our class.
I look forward to traveling with you!
